Itinerary
Take a first stroll through Sweden’s capital and explore some of the many sights and tourist attractions.
You start your tour with a short train ride (ca. 30 minutes) to Rosersberg. After two kilometres the first highlight is awaiting you: Rosersbergs slott. The beautiful palace was built from 1634-1638 and ranks among nine official Swedish royal palaces. Today it is a hotel and accommodates a museum and a Café. The hiking route leads beautifully along the banks of Lake Mälar to the next highlight: Steninge slott. Influenced by Italian architecture, the small baroque styled palace is very unique in Sweden. Today the palace is on private property, the lovely garden can however be visited. Restaurant Stenlådan right next to the palace offers tasty meals for a well deserved lunchtime. Afterwards you continue along hiking trails and forest roads to Sigtuna. The city was founded in 980 and is, together with Lund the oldest, still existing city in Sweden. The small town was an important administrative center in earlier times. A stroll through the main road with its small, typical Swedish houses from the 18th, 19th and 20th century is worth it, before you end your first hiking day with a sauna session and a delicious dinner in your hotel.
From Sigtuna's city center, you walk along Lake Mälaren twoards Odensala. A short detour to the village of Viby (approx. 3 km) is worthwhile. The village's farmes date back to the 19th century and were used as a backdrop for the filming of Emil of lönneberga, amonge other things. There are also remains of Romanesque stone church from the early Middle Ages. Rune stones and graves line the way to today's destination, the church of Odensala. the interior of the church impresses with paintings from around 1500, which are attributed to the painter Albertus Pictor. From the church, you take the public bus back to Sigtuna.
By public transport (not included) you reach Odensala with its church in ca. 45 minutes. The hike leads along forest roads to Knivsta and Alsike, the church in Alsike is another highlight along the way. It is belived that the building with its grey tower has been built with insperation from the impressive Marienkirche in Sigtuna. Shortly afterwards today's hotel is already awaiting you, the mansion is beautifaully located at Lake Mäla and welcomes you with a sauna and spa area.
After a hearty breakfast your last tour is about to start - again with wonderful panoramic views onto Lake Mälar. The route leads through the nature reserve of Kungshamn-Morga, with some nice beach areas for a refreshing bath in the lake. Already from afar Uppsala appears just perceptible. Once you reach bridge Flottsundsbron you continue along Upplandsleden and river Fyrisån all the way to Uppsala, your goal of today and final destination of your holiday.
Today there is time to enjoy the many sights of Uppsala. Alternativley, you can hike along one of the 8 educational Linnaeus nature trail. Carl Linnaeus hiked with his students throughout the region around Uppsala as a part of his research to teath them more about the flora and fauna of the region. Depending on the season, todays's hike along the Danmark Trail awaits you with seas of flowers, the Nåntuna nature reserve with its 2000-year-old burial ground, the Danish church and two of the naturelist's estates. The returne journey is by public bus.
After breakfast your hiking tour ends. We are happy to extend your holiday with extra nights, to top your hiking holiday off with some more marvelous impressions. Uppsala, Sweden’s fourth-biggest town and today’s bishop’s see offers many places of interest. Worth-seeing is the cathedral, Uppsala palace with botanical gardens, Uppsala University with coin cabinet or the king graves of Gamla Uppsala (Old-Uppsala).
