Sweden's most beautiful gardens

Explore fascinating Swedish gardens during this cycling holiday from South to central Sweden.

Look forward to beautiful mansions with impressive castle parks, botanical gardens and city parks during this 8-days active tour. It starts with Sofiero Palace and its park near Helsingborg, in 2010 the park was voted the most beautiful in Europe. In Gothenburg two green oases are waiting - Gunnebo castle and Trädgårdsföreningen. The two gardens inspire with fascinating layouts, environmental certification and even a star in the Michelin Green Guide. In Enköping, a little above Stockholm, around 10 city parks can be explored - each of them individual and beautiful. In Uppsala there is finally time for Carl Linnés unique garden, it is the oldest botanical garden in Sweden. The garden of the University of Uppsala also impresses, together with its orangery, tropical house and castle. A colorful variety not only garden lovers will enjoy, but also those who are interested in the flora of Sweden as well as sustainable and ecological concepts. And last but not least of course delicious taste experiences will not be missed out during this garden week in Sweden either.

Itinerary

Your hotel is located in the center of Helsingborg with easy access to the city’s main attractions, like the medieval watchtower Kärnan and St. Mary’s Church.

Starting with a ride along the promenade in Helsingborg you will soon pass the first highlight for garden enthusiasts: Sofiero Palace with its gardens. The park was awarded as “Europe's most beautiful park” in 2010. Tens of thousands of rhododendrons are blooming in May and June, a real blaze of colors in yellow, orange, red, pink, purple and white from a total of 500 different varieties. The rhododendrons are followed by a sea of flowers made of dahlias, to make sure the eye is pleased with wonderful flowers in every season. The castle also houses a restaurant, a café and a museum. You continue along the coast and through picturesque fishing villages and small ports to Höganäs which is world famous for its salt-glazed ceramics. Via the Kulla peninsula you reach today's destination Ängelholm.

After breakfast you go by train to Kungsbacka. Via Vallda and Särö, the bike route continues towards Mölndal and the next highlight: Gunnebo Castle with its wonderful gardens. These were designed by Gothenburg’s city architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg and laid out at the same time as the castle. Three different gardens can be visited on the site - a formal garden, an English garden and a kitchen garden, all certified with the Swedish environmental label KRAV. The vegetables from the kitchen garden are used in the in-house restaurant, the menu is flexible and tailored to what is currently available in the garden. A visit to the restaurant or the café is very worthwhile and, above all, delicious!

Today your rental bike is enjoying a pause, the next garden is not far from the hotel and can be easily reached on foot. The park of the garden association Trädgårdsföreningen is one of the best preserved gardens from the 18th century and also has a star in the Michelin Green Guide. Every summer around 2.500 roses of 1.200 different varieties are blooming in the organically managed rose garden. An experience for all senses: the wonderful smell of roses, busy bees buzzing around and all the colors are a real treat for the eye. The impressive palm house is divided into five categories and houses around 1.000 m2 of palm trees and all kinds of exotic plants. There is also a café and restaurant on site, perfect for a mid-way lunch break!

Your bike stays in the hotel in Gothenburg and the journey continues by train to Enköping. After checking in at the hotel, around 10 gardens in Enköping are waiting to be explored on foot. The parks consist of more than 100 varieties of different perennials, bulbous plants and ornamental grasses. Each park has been laid out differently. The highlight is Drömparken (dream park), which was created by the Dutchman Piet Oudolf and contains all of his favorite plants. The park is characterized above all by its powerful shapes and high hedges.

Alternatively, Grönsöö Castle and its park can be visited just outside Enköping. The palace, built in 1611, was surrounded by gardens from the start, which were gradually expanded and today reflect the history of Swedish parks in an impressive way. The renaissance orchard from the early 17th century is largely preserved and houses Sweden's oldest cider mill. A glass of apple juice should definitely not be missed! The excursion has a length of about 60 km.

The journey continues via Mälardalsleden and an old railway embankment to University town Uppsala. As the fourth largest city in the country, it houses the current seat of the bishop. Today there is time for sights such as the cathedral church, the coin cabinet or the royal tombs of Gamla Uppsala (Old Uppsala). A visit to the Castle with its botanical garden is of course a must for garden enthusiasts and on tomorrow’s menu!

The Linnaeus garden in central Uppsala is a reconstruction of the botanical garden after Carl von Linné from the middle of the 18th century and the oldest botanical garden in Sweden. Here the Swedish naturalist, doctor and botanist devoted himself mainly to plant systematics. Every part of the garden served a purpose, every plant was carefully chosen. Afterwards the botanical garden of Uppsala’s University waits. In addition to the garden, the orangery, the tropical house with its own rainforest and the castle are well worth seeing.

After breakfast your bike tour ends. We are happy to extend your holidays with extra nights in Uppsala, Stockholm or another town in Sweden.
